Grace Lim-Quek, Head-HR & Admin
HSL Constructor Pte Ltd
Mrs. Grace Lim-Quek, Head of Human Resources and Administration is a keen Work-Life Advocate, and emphatically declares “The overworked culture has been ruling our lives for way too long and it is about time we put a stop to it”.
She shares that she first became acquainted with Work-Life Harmony over 8 years ago, through HR forums and public talks on the topic. This was to be become a subject close to her heart once she got married and started a family.
She says, “After I got married and had children, I developed a strong belief that work and personal life does not have to be competing priorities.” She then made the crucial decision to be the primary care-giver for her children rather than leaving this responsibility to a domestic helper.
Mrs. Lim-Quek was determined to spend quality time with her children and shares, “I want to be able to send my kids to school as opposed to chucking them in the school bus. I want to be able to have dinners with them often, laugh about programmes we watch on television and read bedtime stories to them before tucking them into bed. These are simple joys in life that I am not willing to give up simply because I have heavy responsibility at work”.
Mrs. Lim-Quek’s positive Work-Life attitude is shared by her employer, HSL Constructor. Mrs. Lim-Quek notes that in addition to her personal belief, “the other driving force is the support I have from my bosses. They are traditional construction men in their 50s and 60s and for them to say “We care about the well being of our people! See what you can do.” is a powerful motivator to get me started on programmes for the organisation.” Indeed, HSL Constructor and Mrs. Lim-Quek have embarked on a comprehensive slew of Work-Life initiatives for employees. She says, “I believe that having a Work-Life Policy does help to educate our people on the importance of Work-Life integration and personal Work-Life effectiveness.”
These innovative measures include HSL Movie Nights where the company will periodically book an entire theatre and screen the latest blockbuster movies for employees and their families. Mrs. Lim Quek shares that through this initiative, HSL hopes to encourage employees to take a break from their usual work routines and promote the benefits of recreational activities. |
